'We have covered Antarctica many times in past essays, and despite literally thousands of websites claiming that some calamity is occurring in Antarctica related to global warming, we side with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in this matter. Magazine covers have wonderful pictures of melting of the Antarctic, but IPCC in their 2007 report clearly states “Antarctic sea ice extent continues to show inter-annual variability and localized changes but no statistically significant average trends, consistent with the lack of warming reflected in atmospheric temperatures averaged across the region” (in fact, Antarctic sea ice extent has recently set record highs for both total areal extent as well as total extent anomaly (see here and here)). Furthermore, IPCC tells the world (and we wonder if anyone is listening) “Current global model studies project that the Antarctic ice sheet will remain too cold for widespread surface melting and is expected to gain in mass due to increased snowfall.” '

Here is a very good site for information on the state of the globe, weather-wise:

Here is a heat map of Antarctica, showing where it has gotten the warmest.

Interesting to note: the Warmest part of Antarctica, is also 1) that part of it which is the furtherst out into the ocean, i.e. NORTH, 2) a number of ocean currents all come together at that point, notably WARM water, and 3) there just happens to be a volcano working in that region. 'THE ICE CAP IS MELTING! MELLLLLTINNNNNNNG!'
Not.
Oh yeah!
'By the way, the Gakkel ridge under the Arctic is volcanically active right now and together with the recent inflow of warm water from the Pacific and Atlantic in their multidecadal warm modes may be contributing factors to recent icemelt there as well in recent years. '

Temperatures across the US currently 10-30 degrees Fahrenheit Colder than usual, approaching or breaking decades-old records.
Snow in the Argentine summer.
Record cold and snow in Iran and India.
Did I mention the sun is moving into a cooler phase?
Did I mention the oceans have been moving into a cooler phase since 2003?
' “The observed pattern of warming, comparing surface and atmospheric temperature trends does not show the characteristic fingerprint associated with greenhouse warming.” '

'Seems like in the '90s, El Niño just didn't want to go away. El Niño, an unusual rise in sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, visited three times from 1990 to 1995. In between, temperatures never went quite back to normal, as if it were all one long El Niño. This has led to some intriguing but speculative discussion about the possible link between rising global temperatures and the apparent increase in El Niños.
One respected climate scientist who has gone out on a limb about the global warming-El Niño connection is Kevin Trenberth, a climatologist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. He thinks that El Niño may function as a kind of pressure release valve on the tropics. In an era of global warming, Trenberth says, ocean currents and weather systems might not be able to bleed off all the heat pumped into the tropical seas. Periodically, it has to get rid of the excess that builds up, he suggests, and that safety valve is El Niño.'

Oy. I could do this all morning. I am going to figure that I have made the point, though.
Happy Global Warming NOT!, Everyone!
-------
We got 3 inches of snow yesterday. The warm spell in the beginning of January is keeping the Lake-effect snows pouring down on us, but that will be shut down by lake ice in a few more days. However there have been Massive snows all across Ontario, and I suspect the cries of 'The Great Lakes are Emptying!' will start to fade as huge quantities of fresh water pour into them. Just another of nature's cycles that the climate hystericists will not be able to take advantage of for a while.
Meantime, get yourself a biofuels car and starve people in third-wold nations, while helping make the food on your shelves even more expensive. Note that even the UN is now saying biofuels are a BAD thing.
Geez, I gotta stop. On a royal tear this morning :P
Did I mention there will be NO peace in the ME until Israel is destr-*tears hands from keyboard*

Hello Otter,
I didn't get the memo on why Bill shut down his blog. I'm mainly concerned that something might have happened to him or his wife. I know that she had health problems in the past.
Could you clue me in if you know anything?
Thanks.
Mike Thomas
Mark, I am responding on your blog...
So otter, you responded on my blog about the Little Ice Age II, and funny as it is I just hit my record low temperature this morning for April 3rd (that makes two this week) of 20.8 degrees in Jersey and 18.6 the other day...
